Goal:

Learn the history and basics of the encaustic painting technique.

Description:

Artists have been using wax as a medium for centuries. The recent popularity of encaustic has
created a new interest in the medium. Learn about the encaustic technique and experiment
with the materials yourself.

What You Will Learn:

The history of encaustic
Watch demos of the encaustic technique
Equipment, materials, and resources to pursue encaustic on your own
Experiment with the materials and create your own encaustic works in class

Materials:

Materials will be provided, but you may want to bring some of the following:

Small pieces of plywood, mdf, or masonite (to be used for support)
Special papers, collage elements, copies for solvent transfers
Fired but unglazed ceramic pieces
Fabric, thread, string
Small objects to embed in the wax
Unsuccessful drawings or paintings that you'd like to recycle
Scraping tools (dissecting needles, ceramic tools, woodworking tools)
Oil or soft pastels, colored pencils, grease pencils, charcoal, oil paint

Note: wax has to have something absorbent to adhere to, so acrylic paint, plastic, glass, or metal is not
recommended

Textbook:

Not required, but definitely recommended if you think you’d like to pursue encaustic on your own:

About the Instructor:

Deanna Wood received a Master of Fine Arts in Studio Painting from Texas Woman’s University. She also
holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Arts in Graphic Design from Texas Woman’s University.
Her encaustic paintings have been featured in many national juried, group and invitational shows. Her
solo show, Seeking Shelter, was featured recently in Lamoni, Iowa; Manhattan, Kansas and Douglasville, Georgia.
