This series explores that idea – how these places shape us, how we remember meaningful places, and how our memories of such places change over time. Maps have always fascinated me. I love looking at them and drawing them. My family moved a lot during my childhood. My dad worked for IBM, and those who’ve lived through it joke it stands for “I’ve Been Moved.” The maps featured in this work are my own creation. They represent all the places where I’ve lived – recalled either from memory or loosely based on actual maps. Vintage wallpaper and stitching represent home. My mom was a master wallpaper hanger. All of our houses featured miles of the latest wallpaper patterns. Together with images of all the houses in which I’ve lived, these scraps of wallpaper and fictional maps represent fragmented memories of my personal space. The encaustic process involves melting beeswax with a natural resin and then adding pigment. Hot wax is brushed onto the surface and then fused with a heat gun or torch. fascinated by tornadoes. The inspiration for my work comes from recurring dreams about tornadoes. Imagery such as telephone poles and houses represent shelter and safety. Trees and limbs suggest wind and chaos. This work illustrates the fragility of life. By focusing on the human need for order in the face of chaos, it serves as a reminder that life is fleeting. We brainstormed on a title that played on the idea of wax and came up with “Waxy Buildup : Cleaning House.” We decided to interpret this theme each in our own way and posted our progress on a blog. When we came up with the phrase 'waxy buildup,' I immediately visualized the stereotypical 50’s housewife – happy to not only serve her family and clean her house but look beautiful to boot. I used imagery and text that evokes the advertising aimed at the typical 50’s housewife – “saves time!” for your family,” and “clean and pure.” The nostalgic images and words allude to a happier, We all have secrets. Things we hide from everyone except ourselves. If you happened to write one down or speak it aloud, could you hide it again? Once revealed, can it be erased? Or does it always leave a trace, to be rediscovered later by someone else? What if you told a secret and didn’t notice the birds sitting silently in the trees around you?
